Glee Does Original Songs

So Glee fans, how do you feel about the New Directions incorporating original songs into the their repertoire? For a show that's built its reputation stamping its signature on already well-known pop songs, this is a new direction, indeed.

But that's just what the show plans to do in the March 15 episode. Of the two original songs to be featured in this Regionals-themed episode, one is introduced as a ballad, "Get It Right," that Rachel (Lea Michele) has written. The other is a group number, "Loser Like Me," that's meant to be an upbeat anthem for the show overall. Click here to read about the top-notch pop songwriters who penned them. 

If you've been watching Glee, then you know that Rachel already considers herself something of a burgeoning songwriter. Based on last week's ode to her headband, though, you also know that she's got a long way to go before she can replace the word "burgeoning" with "accomplished" in that sentence. But even if her original song is a winner -- with lyrics like What can you do when your good isn't good / And all that you touch tumbles down / 'Cause my best intentions / Keep making a mess of things / Just wanna fix it somehow / But how many times will it take / Oh, how many times will it take... for me to get it right? -- it's anyone's guess whether viewers will connect with it. Let's face it, we all like to sing along to songs we know. Preferably cheesy ones.

The obvious rebuttal: Creating its own catchy, original songs would elevate Glee on both an artistic and a commercial level. Not to mention we'd get more catchy pop songs for our iPods. And maybe, possibly, we'd be more receptive to new songs if they were delivered by beloved characters like Brittany (Heather Morris) or Kurt (Chris Colfer).

But not if it means the total disappearance of cheesy pop songs getting Glee-ified. Luckily, the producers get that. "I see more originals [in the future]," the series' music producer, Adam Anders, told EW.com. "But to do one every week? No, not at all."

That's good news, because without heartfelt Journey songs, well, it just wouldn't be Glee.
