Yes, Chelsea Handler has called Angelina Jolie evil. And yes, she's recently become close friends with Jennifer Aniston. You would be forgiven for thinking there's a connection there -- but according to Handler, Jolie has been a staple of her stand-up act for the past ten years.
"Can I just say, that I've been making fun of Angelina Jolie since she made out with her brother," Handler, 35, said on her late-night E! show Chelsea Lately. (She's referring, of course, to the big smooch Jolie laid on her brother James Haven when she won her Oscar in 1999.) Watch the clip of Chelsea's defense:
Handler was prompted to talk about Angelina after Sherri Shepherd on The View suggested that Handler was saying the things that Aniston herself was afraid to say in public. Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar disagreed, saying that material from Handler's stand-up act was purely for entertainment value and shouldn't be taken out of context. If you watched that now-infamous video of Handler's weekend show, you know that the comedienne had more than a few harsh words for Jolie, whom she's repeatedly called "evil," a "b***h," and a "home wrecker." But you'll notice that all of Handler's comments are based on Jolie's public press and interviews -- not on some sort of insider knowledge. Whatever conversations she did or did not have with Aniston are really beside the point. It's pretty clear that Handler is making fun of Jolie because the press makes her out to be a saint, and Chelsea enjoys being irreverent and shocking.
As for Handler, she says that she's been doing the same act every weekend -- and that the only thing this whole to-do has taught her is that she needs to "write new jokes."
